WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has threatened further military action against Iran after Iranian forces launched attacks targeting US military bases in Jordan, marking a fresh escalation in the conflict between Washington and Tehran.
Trump said the United States would respond forcefully after Iran targeted US positions in Jordan. “We’re going to hit them hard,” Trump told Fox News, according to reports published on Monday.
The latest escalation followed US military strikes against Iranian rocket-launching positions on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz. US Central Command described the action as limited and precise and said it targeted Iranian forces involved in preparations for operations in the strategically important waterway.
Iran subsequently launched missiles toward two US bases in Jordan. Jordan’s armed forces said eight missiles that entered the country’s airspace were intercepted, according to reporting by Sky News.

The exchange represents the first direct US-Iran military confrontation in several weeks after a period of relative calm. The renewed fighting has raised concerns that the conflict could again expand across the wider Middle East.
Trump’s warning came as his administration continued to apply economic pressure on Tehran. At the same time, Iranian officials have indicated that they do not want a return to a wider war but have warned that Iran would respond to further attacks.
The developments have also increased concern over the security of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy routes. Renewed military activity in and around the waterway has already contributed to higher oil prices and increased concerns about disruptions to global energy supplies.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has called for a negotiated resolution, while Tehran has warned that continued military attacks could trigger stronger retaliation. The competing statements highlight the difficult balance between military escalation and diplomatic efforts to prevent the conflict from widening.
For now, Trump’s threat of further strikes leaves open the possibility of another round of US military action against Iranian targets. Any additional attacks could further intensify tensions across the region and put pressure on already vulnerable regional security and energy routes.
